Definition
Actinopoda is a group of single-celled organisms characterized by their spherical shape and radiating needle-like pseudopods called axopodia. Think of them as tiny suns with rays extending outwards. These organisms are mostly found in aquatic environments, both fresh and saltwater. The axopodia are used for capturing food and movement. Many actinopods have intricate silica skeletons. They are an important part of the plankton community, playing a role in marine ecosystems.
