Definition
The term 'African elephant' generally refers to either of the two species in the *Loxodonta* genus: the African bush elephant (*Loxodonta africana*) and the African forest elephant (*Loxodonta cyclotis*). They are the largest land animals on Earth, known for their massive size, large ears, and two 'fingers' on their trunk. African elephants play a critical role in their ecosystems, influencing vegetation and creating habitats for other species. Unfortunately, they face significant threats from poaching and habitat loss. Think of them as the heavyweight champions of the animal kingdom!
