Definition
Afropavo is a genus of bird that contains only one species: the Congo peafowl (Afropavo congensis). This makes it a monotypic genus, unique for being the only peafowl native to the African continent, specifically the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was a relatively late discovery in the avian world, identified in 1936. Think of Afropavo as the VIP section with one exclusive member – the Congo peafowl. Its existence highlights the fact that biodiversity is still being discovered and understood. Its conservation is critical due to its limited range and habitat.
