Definition

An allelomorph, now more commonly called an allele, is one of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome. Think of it as a different version of a program or app. For instance, a gene determining flower color might have allelomorphs for red or white flowers. Each individual inherits two allelomorphs for each gene, one from each parent. These allelomorphs interact to determine the individual's traits. Allelomorphs are what cause genetic variation.

Etymology

The term "allelomorph" was coined by William Bateson in the early 1900s. It literally means "another form." It was intended to emphasize that genes can exist in multiple alternative versions. 'Allelomorph' has largely been replaced by the simpler term 'allele'.
