Definition
'Archean' refers to the eon of geologic time from about 4.0 to 2.5 billion years ago. It represents the early stages of Earth's formation and the emergence of the first life forms. Think of volcanic activity, intense heat, and the development of early oceans. This eon precedes the Proterozoic. The Archean is characterized by the absence of oxygen in the atmosphere. It's a period of fundamental geological and biological development. It is essentially a record of the Earth's turbulent infancy.
