An arcus, or arcus senilis, is a grayish or whitish ring that appears around the edge of the cornea. It's caused by fatty deposits in the outer part of the cornea. Think of it as a faint halo around your iris. It's very common in older adults and is generally considered a normal sign of aging. However, in younger people, it can sometimes indicate high cholesterol levels. It doesn't usually affect vision, but it's important to have it checked by a doctor, especially if it appears before age 40.
