Definition
A bacteroid is a modified bacterial cell, often irregularly shaped, found in the root nodules of leguminous plants. These specialized bacteria, commonly from the genus *Rhizobium*, participate in a symbiotic relationship with the plant. The plant provides the bacteroid with a protected environment and nutrients. The bacteroid, in turn, fixes atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia, a form the plant can use for growth. This mutually beneficial relationship is essential for plant health and soil fertility. 🌱
