In heraldry, a 'bend sinister' is a diagonal band running from the upper right (from the viewer's perspective) to the lower left of a coat of arms 🛡️. It's one of the basic heraldic ordinaries, similar to a stripe across a shield. Unlike the mythical 'bar sinister,' the bend sinister is a real, established part of heraldic design. It can be used to differentiate branches of a family or to simply add visual interest to the coat of arms. It's not inherently negative or related to illegitimacy, despite common misconceptions. Think of it as a design element, like choosing a specific color or animal to represent your family.
