Definition
The term 'big-cone spruce' is another misnomer. While some sources might use this term loosely, it's not a recognized or accurate name for the Douglas fir or any other well-defined tree species. Think of it as a nickname that never really caught on. It may simply refer to a spruce tree with larger than average cones. True spruces belong to the genus Picea, separate from the Douglas fir's Pseudotsuga.
