Bivalvia is a class of marine and freshwater mollusks that have shells composed of two hinged parts or 'valves'. Think of them as natureβs little lockboxes! These creatures include clams, oysters, mussels, and scallops. They are characterized by their laterally compressed bodies and lack of a distinct head. Most are filter feeders, obtaining food by straining particles from the water. Unlike snails that crawl, many bivalves are sessile or burrow into the seabed. Their shells protect them from predators and environmental hazards. Bivalves are important components of aquatic ecosystems.
