Definition
A blastema is a mass of undifferentiated cells capable of growth and regeneration. It is observed during limb regeneration in amphibians and some other animals. In developmental biology, it refers to a collection of cells that will form a specific structure or organ. Think of it as a "blank slate" of cells with the potential to develop into various tissues. Blastema is also found in some tumors, where it represents a population of rapidly dividing, undifferentiated cells.
