Definition
A "bluebottle" is a type of blow fly known for its iridescent blue or bluish-green metallic coloration. Think of it as the fancy, shiny cousin of the common housefly. They are frequently found near carrion (dead animals) and are important decomposers in the ecosystem. They are not only found on carrion; they can also be found on garbage or open wounds. Bluebottles are a common sight in both urban and rural environments. They are the 'fashionistas' of the fly world, albeit with questionable taste.
