Definition
*Bombyx mori* is the scientific name for the domesticated silkworm moth. This species is entirely dependent on humans for survival, as it has been selectively bred for silk production for thousands of years. The larvae, or silkworms, spin a cocoon of raw silk. Adult moths are creamy-white and cannot fly effectively. In essence, *Bombyx mori* is a living textile factory. Silk is their entire raison d'etre.
