The term 'bourgeoisie' refers to the middle class, particularly those who own capital and whose concerns are typically materialistic or conventional. It originally described the merchant class in medieval Europe but now often implies a focus on wealth and status. It can sometimes carry a negative connotation, suggesting a lack of artistic or intellectual pursuits. It contrasts with the proletariat, or working class. Think of them as the people with the fancy houses and the 'keeping up with the Joneses' mentality.
