Definition
Branchiobdella are small, segmented worms that live as ectosymbionts, primarily on freshwater crayfish. Think of them as tiny freeloaders hitching a ride on a crustacean's gills. They feed on algae, fungi, and detritus found on their host. They are typically a few millimeters long. These worms are not considered parasitic, as they usually don't harm the crayfish. However, heavy infestations can sometimes cause irritation. Scientists study them to understand symbiotic relationships.
