Definition
Calapooya, also spelled Kalapuya, refers to a group of Native American tribes who inhabited the Willamette Valley in present-day Oregon. They spoke various dialects of the Kalapuyan language family. They lived in settled villages and practiced seasonal agriculture and hunting. European settlement and disease decimated their population in the 19th century. Think of them as the original inhabitants of a lush valley in a fantasy series like *Lord of the Rings*. 🏞️
