Definition
Castanea pumila, commonly known as the Allegheny chinkapin or dwarf chestnut, is a small shrub or tree native to the southeastern United States. It produces small, sweet nuts enjoyed by wildlife and occasionally humans. Unlike larger chestnut species, it rarely exceeds 15 feet in height. This species is adapted to dry, sandy soils. Think of it as a resourceful survivor, thriving in tough conditions. It is a smaller relative in the chestnut family.
