Definition
Chondriosome is an older term, essentially a synonym for mitochondrion. It refers to the organelle within eukaryotic cells responsible for generating energy through cellular respiration. While 'mitochondrion' is the more commonly used term today, 'chondriosome' was prevalent in early cell biology. Like mitochondria, chondriosomes are involved in ATP production and have a double membrane structure. Think of it as the original name for the cell's powerhouse, now mostly replaced by a more modern term. It's a piece of scientific history.
