Definition
A cithern is an older spelling variation of "cittern," a Renaissance-era stringed instrument related to the guitar and lute. π΅ Think of it as a historical cousin to the modern guitar. It has a flat back and wire strings, producing a bright, chiming sound. Citherns were popular in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. They were used for both solo performances and in ensembles. This instrument is now mostly seen in museums or heard in historical recordings.
