Definition
A dictyosome is a stack of cisternae in the Golgi apparatus of plant cells and some invertebrates. Think of it as a single 'pancake' stack in a larger cellular kitchen π₯. Plant cells often have many scattered dictyosomes rather than a single, centralized Golgi. Each dictyosome functions similarly to a Golgi body, processing and packaging proteins. These structures are critical for plant cell function. They support the plant's unique cellular needs. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with Golgi body, but technically refers to a single stack.
