The domestic pigeon, or *Columba livia domestica*, is that pigeon you see chilling in parks or on buildings. Unlike its wild rock dove ancestor, it's totally used to humans. Think of them as the chill, street-smart birds of the city. They're basically the avian equivalent of a stray cat, adapted to urban life. Domestic pigeons are known for their ability to navigate, which is why they were historically used as messenger birds. They come in all sorts of colors and patterns, making them quite the diverse bird group.
