Definition
Downy manzanita (*Arctostaphylos canescens*) is an evergreen shrub characterized by its hairy (downy) leaves and stems. It is native to California and is often found in chaparral and oak woodland ecosystems. It prefers well-drained soils and sunny locations. The downy hairs help reduce water loss in dry conditions. Unlike other Manzanitas, its bark might be less smooth. The plant is well-adapted to fire-prone environments.
