A drop keel, also called a sliding keel, is a type of retractable keel on a sailboat. It slides vertically down from the hull to provide stability and prevent sideways drift. Think of it as a retractable fin on the bottom of the boat. It's used in small sailboats or dinghies, allowing them to navigate shallow waters when raised and maintain stability when lowered. It's similar to a centerboard, but typically heavier and provides more ballast. ⚖️ It offers a balance between shallow-water access and upwind performance.
