Definition
The term "Eastern Church" generally refers to several distinct Christian churches that developed in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. These churches have their own traditions, liturgies, and theological emphases. They often differ from the Western (Roman Catholic) Church in their practices and doctrines. Examples include the Orthodox Church and various Eastern Catholic Churches that are in communion with Rome but retain their distinct traditions. The term encompasses a diverse range of Christian communities. It is essentially the churches that did not follow the Roman Catholic Church.
