Definition
Elateridae is the scientific family name for click beetles. These beetles are known for their unique 'clicking' mechanism, which allows them to flip themselves into the air when they are upside down. This clicking sound and movement are produced by a spine on their prosternum that snaps into a groove on their mesosternum. Elateridae beetles are typically elongated and have a somewhat flattened body shape. The larvae, known as wireworms, are often agricultural pests. Click beetles are found in various habitats around the world.
