Definition
The 'end man' refers to a performer in a minstrel show, typically positioned at the end of a line of performers. Unlike other performers, the end men were known for their exaggerated comedic roles and often told jokes and played instruments. They were usually positioned at either end of the stage, hence the name. Minstrel shows, however, are now recognized as deeply racist and perpetuating harmful stereotypes of African Americans. Understanding the term requires acknowledging its historical context and the problematic nature of minstrelsy. The role is now considered offensive and is rarely, if ever, performed.
