An eschar is a tough, leathery crust that forms on the skin after a burn, deep ulcer, or other trauma. It's composed of dead tissue and is usually black or dark brown. Unlike a scab, an eschar is often thicker and covers a more significant area. It's a sign of more severe damage, like a third-degree burn. Eschar can impede healing and sometimes requires medical removal, such as in burn victims. Think of it as a dead layer that the body needs to shed to properly heal the damaged area.
