The Eustachian tube is a narrow passage that connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx (the upper part of the throat behind the nose). Its primary function is to equalize pressure between the middle ear and the outside environment. It opens when you swallow, yawn, or chew, allowing air to flow in or out of the middle ear. This helps prevent pressure imbalances that can cause discomfort or even damage to the eardrum. Think of it as a tiny pressure valve for your ears.
