Definition
False vocal cords, also known as ventricular folds or vestibular folds, are folds of mucous membrane located above the true vocal cords in the larynx. They don't typically vibrate to produce sound. Think of them as protective cushions above the real vocal cords. Their primary function is to protect the true vocal cords and provide resonance. They can sometimes vibrate in unusual vocal styles, like throat singing, but it is rare. The 'false' indicates they are not primarily for vocalization.
