Definition
Family Esocidae includes pikes, pickerels, and muskellunge, all predatory freshwater fish. They are characterized by their elongated bodies, forked tails, and sharp teeth. Think of them as the cheetahs of the lake – built for speed and hunting. They are ambush predators, waiting patiently for their prey. Compared to other fish families, Esocidae are relatively few in number of species. They play a vital role in controlling populations of other fish.
