Definition
A fire escape is a specialized exit, usually on the exterior of a building, providing an escape route in case of fire. Think of it as a building's emergency ladder. It often consists of a series of platforms and ladders. It's designed to provide a safe alternative to interior stairwells, which can quickly fill with smoke and become unusable. Fire escapes are most commonly found on older buildings, especially in urban areas. Unlike elevators, fire escapes are strictly for emergencies.
