A "first strike" is a surprise military attack initiated by one country or force against another. It is intended to cripple the enemy's ability to retaliate. It's different from a defensive action because it is unprovoked. Think of it as punching first in a fight. It aims to gain an advantage by striking before the opponent can. Unlike a preemptive strike (which is based on an imminent threat), a first strike is often seen as an act of aggression. It could involve missiles, planes, or ground troops.
