Definition
The fourth ventricle is a cavity in the brain located within the brainstem, specifically between the pons and the cerebellum. Think of it as a protective room for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This fluid cushions the brain and spinal cord, providing nutrients and removing waste. It connects to the third ventricle via the cerebral aqueduct and to the central canal of the spinal cord. Essentially, itβs like a crucial intersection in the brain's plumbing system, ensuring smooth fluid flow. Its shape is somewhat diamond-like, helping to distribute CSF effectively.
