The free throw lane, also known as the key, is the rectangular area on a basketball court extending from the free throw line to the baseline. Players can't stand in this area for more than three seconds at a time when their team has the ball. It's where players line up during free throws and battle for rebounds. Think of it as prime real estate near the basket where strategic positioning is key. Violating the three-second rule results in a turnover, giving the ball to the opposing team. This zone is crucial for offensive and defensive strategies.
