Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) was a multifaceted Norwegian: explorer, scientist, diplomat, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. He's most celebrated for leading the *Fram* expedition, intentionally trapping his ship in Arctic ice to study the polar region. His meticulous scientific observations greatly advanced oceanography and meteorology. After his exploring days, he championed refugees and stateless people through the League of Nations. He was a man of action, intellect, and unwavering compassion, truly a remarkable figure.
