Definition
Genus Brasenia refers to a specific group of aquatic plants, essentially a botanical classification. It's like sorting animals into categories like 'felines' or 'canines,' but for plants. Brasenia only contains one species: Brasenia schreberi, commonly known as watershield. Watershields are characterized by their floating oval leaves and gelatinous coating on the stems and undersides of the leaves. Think of them as the water lilies' less showy but equally interesting cousins. They often thrive in quiet, nutrient-poor waters such as lakes and ponds. They provide shelter for small aquatic creatures and are sometimes used in Asian cuisine.
