Definition
Genus Piroplasma refers to a group of tick-borne parasitic protozoans that infect red blood cells of various animals. These parasites cause diseases, generally called piroplasmosis, characterized by fever, anemia, and sometimes jaundice. Think of Piroplasma as microscopic pirates hijacking red blood cells for their own survival. The infection spreads through tick bites, making tick prevention crucial in endemic areas. Different species within the genus target different hosts, ranging from livestock to wildlife.
