Definition
A Girondin (also Girondist) refers to a member of a moderate republican faction during the French Revolution. They opposed the more radical Jacobins. The Girondins favored a decentralized government and resisted extreme measures. Think of them as the political 'middle ground' during a very turbulent time. They advocated for constitutionalism and a less violent approach to change. They were eventually purged by the Jacobins and many were executed.
