The greater omentum is a large apron-like fold of visceral peritoneum that hangs down from the stomach. Think of it as the body's internal "bodyguard," rich with fat and immune cells. It drapes over the intestines, protecting and insulating them. It also helps to localize infections, preventing them from spreading widely. It is very pliable and mobile and migrates towards areas of inflammation or injury, walling them off. The omentum can be compared to a "surgical policeman" of the abdomen due to its ability to adhere to inflamed organs.
