Definition
Haemoproteidae is a family of parasitic protozoans belonging to the order Haemosporida. These parasites infect birds, reptiles, and amphibians, residing within their red blood cells. They are transmitted by blood-sucking insects, such as biting midges and hippoboscid flies, rather than mosquitoes. While they can cause disease in their hosts, infections are often asymptomatic or mild. Think of them as avian or reptilian blood parasites, similar to malaria parasites but with different vectors. They represent a branch of parasitic diversity. Their impact varies across different hosts.
