A hedge sparrow is another name for the dunnock (Prunella modularis), a small, inconspicuous bird found in Europe and parts of Asia. Despite the name, it's not closely related to sparrows. They prefer hedges and bushes as habitats. Think of it as the shy, brown bird you often see flitting around gardens. They have a complex social life with unusual mating habits. They're ground feeders, searching for insects and seeds.
