Definition
A heterograft, also known as a xenograft, involves transplanting tissue or organs from one species to another. Think of it as putting parts from a motorcycle into a car 🏍️➡️🚗; it's a bit unconventional. Pig heart valves are sometimes used in humans as heterografts. The risk of rejection is higher with heterografts because the tissues are so different. Scientists are working on ways to make heterografts more compatible with the human body. Unlike homografts (same species), heterografts cross species boundaries.
