Definition
Holland is a historical region and former province on the western coast of the Netherlands. Think of it as a part representing the whole, like saying "Hollywood" when you mean the U.S. film industry. It's where major cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague are located. Unlike the entire country of the Netherlands, Holland refers specifically to North and South Holland provinces. Historically, Holland was the most influential province, leading to its name being used colloquially for the entire country.
