Sir Humphrey Gilbert (c. 1539β1583) was an English explorer, soldier, navigator, and politician. He's best known for claiming Newfoundland for England in 1583, marking an early stage of English colonization in North America. Gilbert was a half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh. His voyages aimed to discover a Northwest Passage to Asia and establish English settlements. Sadly, his ambition was cut short when he died at sea during a return voyage. Think of him as a determined, though ultimately unsuccessful, pioneer of English expansion.
