Definition
A hunter-gatherer is a human living in a society in which most or all food is obtained by foraging (collecting wild plants and pursuing wild animals). Hunter-gatherer societies stand in contrast to agricultural societies, which rely mainly on domesticated species. These societies are often nomadic, moving to follow available food sources. Hunter-gatherers possess intimate knowledge of their environment, including plant and animal behavior. Their lifestyle requires adaptability, resilience, and cooperation within the group. Hunter-gatherer societies represent a significant part of human history and continue to exist in some parts of the world. They highlight the ingenuity and resourcefulness of early humans.
