Definition
The ileocolic artery is a blood vessel that supplies blood to the end of the small intestine (ileum) and the beginning of the large intestine (colon). Think of it as a bridge connecting blood supply between these two key parts of your digestive system. It branches off the superior mesenteric artery, ensuring both the ileum and colon get the oxygen and nutrients they need. Without it, both regions would struggle to function properly, like two neighboring cities relying on the same road for supplies.
