"In loco parentis" is a Latin phrase meaning "in the place of a parent." It refers to the legal responsibility of a person or organization to take on some of the functions and responsibilities of a parent. Think of a school principal who has the authority to make decisions about student behavior and safety. It usually applies when parents are absent or unable to fulfill their duties. It gives a person or institution the power to act in the best interests of a child. It's common in schools, colleges, and other institutions that care for minors.
