Definition
"Lapplander" is an older term for a person belonging to the Sámi people, an Indigenous group inhabiting the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Today, the term is often considered outdated or even offensive by some Sámi people, who prefer to be called Sámi. They have a rich culture traditionally based on reindeer herding, fishing, and hunting. The term "Lapplander" can be seen as a colonial label imposed on them. It’s similar to how some Indigenous groups in North America prefer not to be called "Indians." Think of it as a name with a complicated past.
