Definition
Laryngismus is a spasm of the vocal cords that makes it difficult or impossible to breathe. It's like a temporary closure of your airway at the larynx (voice box). This can be triggered by irritants, acid reflux, or even emotional stress. It can be a frightening experience, causing a feeling of suffocation. Usually, it's a brief episode, but in severe cases, it may require medical intervention. Imagine your throat suddenly clamping shut – that's laryngismus. It's a malfunction of the vocal cord muscles.
