Definition
Lophiidae is a family of anglerfishes, characterized by their large mouths and distinctive fishing lure (illicium). These bottom-dwelling fishes are found in oceans worldwide. Anglerfish use their lure to attract unsuspecting prey close to their mouths. They are known for their voracious appetites and ability to consume prey larger than themselves. Theyβre the ambush predators of the sea, waiting patiently for a meal to wander into their trap. Their camouflage is excellent for blending into the seabed.
